April 25, 2006:
Here's some quickie news for the day:
First, President Bush proposed some minor band aids for the current gas
crisis in true corporatist fashion – roll-back environmental restrictions
in order to produce more gas faster. He also blamed environmentalists
for the current gas situation. House Majority Whip Roy Blunt did Bush
one better by placing the blame
squarely on environmentalists and Democrats: "... this energy
crisis.... is a direct result of years of unreasonable, burdensome regulations
and obstruction on the part of radical environmentalists." Yes, forget
that we are consume more energy and pollute more per capita than any other
country, and that we really should have been conserving and focusing on
alternative energy over the past decade. Even enviro-Republicans believe
it is a true Conservative value to invest in alternative energy to bring
more jobs in the U.S. and to stop reliance on foreign oil. But it is the
Democrat's fault, so let's just pollute more now and we'll worry about
it later. Great policy, guys!
Also, very worthy of note, since most corporate media won't be covering this story, the LA Times reported that the Pentagon plans to release nearly a third (141 prisoners) of those held at the Guantanamo prison as terrorism suspects because they pose no threat to US security. Charges are pending against about two dozen of the remaining prisoners. Only 10 of the roughly 490 alleged "enemy combatants" currently detained at the facility have been charged; none has been charged with a capital offense.
So, to all who claimed GITMO was for our national security, because otherwise they would be attacking us here, you really need to stop listening to FOX tell you what you want to hear and get a more informed and accurate news outlet.
